My name is Roy El-Rayes. I’ve been in the tech world for many years. I used to dabble with smart home things when I was younger using my Arduino and a computer. These days, Amazon, Google and a bunch of other companies who have design skills much better than I have made it easier than ever.
I also have a daughter (who is awesome) and a wife (who is awesome). While I’d love to jump straight into everything, I need to find a balance between cool tech and making sure my family can keep up.
I started this blog because there is a ton of information out there and it’s constantly changing. I wanted to make a one-stop shop that tries to stay up to date and objective. Z-Wave? Bluetooth? Wifi? Which is best? I don’t know, but I’m going to find out.
Why Home Automation?
I was fortunate enough to have been on the internet since 1995. I was able to witness it go from Angelfire and Geocities websites to what it is now, which is a huge part of our everyday lives. I feel Home Automation is at that point right now. With big companies such as Amazon and Google jumping on the wave, I feel we are at the forefront of a brand new era of tech.
There are a lot of issues to resolve, some of which we haven’t even touched on. Interoperability, security and usability are things that are still being worked on. You have many different devices from many different manufacturers, each with their own app and protocol. At the end of the day, which one is best?
I could go all day talking about it, or I could create a blog and get my thoughts out.
Home Automation is a lot of fun. It lets me combine my love of technology with my love of my home. Seeing as how you’re here, I’m willing to bet you feel the same way.
